Three Sisters

Three women talk at a table. Picked up via headset microphones, the words they say belong on the lips of three women trapped in a life of social decay and lost hope, in provincial Russia over 100 years ago. But they are not these women – they are not there, it is not then – and they know it. The conversation turns into a game, a free-flowing game of performer and audience, of theatre and reality, that spills across the stage, into the auditorium and beyond...

Three Sisters is a re-presentation of Anton Chekhov’s play, a theatre piece that is as much about its performance, its performers and its audience, as it is about three women trapped in provincial Russia, over 100 years ago.

After a break of nearly seven years, Three Sisters marks the return of Plane Performance, returning to the home territory of Chekhov, but breaking new ground in the process. Once again directed by Neil Mackenzie, Three Sisters features long time collaborator Niki Woods, with Belgian theatre artist Leentje Van De Cruys, Georgia Dawson, Kevin Egan and Megan Harris.

Three Sisters is also the key component of a Practice as Research project, supported by the Institute of Performance Research at Manchester Metropolitan University, looking at whether the presentation of a dramatic text via live theatrical performance might in effect constitute a complex discursive encounter. For further details please see the latest blog posting below, or for a full range of research activity from the Conceptualised Arts Practices groups please visit the website at Manchester Metropolitan University.
